Yoga day

International Yoga Day is celebrated worldwide on 21st June 2023 with the aim of raising awareness about health and fitness. This year, the theme for International Yoga Day 2023 is “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam,” which signifies the concept of the global family. Yoga is a holistic practice that promotes physical and mental relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves overall well-being. It is known to enhance heart health, reduce blood pressure, increase flexibility and muscular strength, improve respiratory function, reduce inflammation, and promote mental wellness.

The United Nations officially recognized 21st June as the International Day of Yoga through a resolution passed on 11th December 2014. Yoga symbolizes the union of body and consciousness, and its widespread appeal led to the establishment of this special day. The practice of yoga aims to bring unity and harmony, not only within oneself but also with the world.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2023, “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam,” emphasizes the interconnectedness of all beings and the idea that the earth is our home. It highlights the importance of embracing a global perspective and treating everyone as part of one big family. Yoga not only provides physical relaxation but also helps in relieving mental and emotional tension, promoting a sense of belonging and unity among individuals.

To celebrate International Yoga Day, there are various activities you can participate in. You can enroll in a yoga class, perform yoga at home, learn about the history and philosophy of yoga, share your yoga experiences on social media, and encourage others to try yoga.

The initiative to propose the International Day of Yoga was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India during his speech to the UN General Assembly on 27th September 2014. According to PM Modi, yoga is a gift from India that can contribute to the health and happiness of people worldwide. On 11th December 2014, the United Nations adopted the resolution to observe June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. The first commemoration of this day took place on 21st June 2015.

In order to promote widespread participation in the 9th International Day of Yoga (IDY-2023), the Ministry of Ayush has launched several flagship projects. One of these projects is the “100 Days, 100 Cities, and 100 Organizations” campaign by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. This initiative aims to spread knowledge about yoga among individuals across the country and emphasizes enhancing people’s health and well-being. The Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, and Border Road Organisation are also organizing yoga demonstrations as part of the ‘Yog Bharatmala’ project. These demonstrations take place along the borders, coasts, and islands and focus on the unifying power of yoga in various geographical settings.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2023 aims to spread awareness about yoga’s comprehensive wellness philosophy. It highlights the importance of physical and mental well-being in contemporary society and encourages the establishment of a regular meditation practice to foster mental clarity and self-awareness. In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, the aim is to promote mental, emotional, and spiritual balance and emphasize the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to life. Yoga supports stress reduction, mindfulness, overall health, and vitality.

The World Health Organization has also called on its member nations to help their populations reduce physical inactivity, which is one of the top ten global causes of mortality and a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Yoga goes beyond being just a physical workout. As stated by the renowned yoga practitioner B.K.S. Iyengar, it cultivates the skills needed to carry out daily activities with skill and equips individuals to maintain a balanced attitude in life.

In conclusion, International Yoga Day 2023 is celebrated worldwide on 21st June to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga for physical and mental well-being. The theme “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam” emphasizes the idea of the global family and the interconnectedness of all beings. Through yoga, individuals can achieve relaxation, reduce stress, improve their overall health, and foster a sense of unity and belonging. The celebration of this day provides an opportunity to learn about the practice of yoga, participate in various activities, and promote its benefits to others.
